Getting to Archipelago
Set in the heart of Southeast Asia, Indonesia islands
are easily accessible from most parts of the world by air, surface
and sea links.
BY AIR
Over 45 international airlines fly into the country while national
carrier Garuda Indonesia Airline has a global network that spans
six continents and a national network that covers more than 36 local
destinations. Many low-budget airline also services certain domestic
and regional routes.
Most visitors arrive by air at one of the six international airports
in Cengkareng. Indonesia's three main gateways are Soekarno-Hatta
International Airport, Jakarta, Polonia Airport in Medan and Ngurah
Rai Airport in Bali. Several international airlines serve Jakarta.
The rest of the country, including Sumatera, Kalimanatan, Sulawesi,
Maluku, Papua, East-nusatenggara are well serviced by domestically
it serves 33 cities including all the provincial capitals, domestic
airports and airstrips. Air services are available to all provincial
district capitals and other remote areas operated by Garuda Indonesia,
LionAir, AirSriwijaya, Merpati Nusantara, Garuda Indonesia, the
national flag carrier, operates on both international and domestic
routes.
The only all-jet airline on domestic routes, it has
several daily flights from Jakarta to destination of commercial
and touristic importance, such as Bali, Medan, Ujung Pandang, Manado
and Yogyakarta. It also operates shuttIe flights to Surabaya and
Semarang several times a day.
The passes are sold in conjunction with travel on Garuda from Europe,
USA, Australia and Japan, and have to be purchased from Garuda Offices
in these areas. On its international network, Garuda Indonesia serves
London, Amsterdam, Brussles, Frankfurt, Paris, Zurich, Rome, Vienna,
Cairo, Abudhabi, Jeddah and Riyadh. In Asia and to points South,
destinations are Ho Chi Min city, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, Manila,
Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Nagoya, Seoul, Singapore, Brunei, New Zealand,
Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Portheland and Auckland. Garuda
serves Honolulu and Los Angeles as well.
Merpati Nusantara Airlines is the second national
carrier and flies to about 110 destination in Indonesia and has
some border crossing flights to Australia (Darwin), Brunei Darussalam,
Davao (Philippines), and East Malaysia (Kuching). Bouraq and Mandala
also have scheduled services. Medan receives direct flights from
Singapore, Penang and Kuala Lumpur operated by Singapore Airlines,
Malaysian Airlines System (MASj, Silk Air and Garuda. There are
some other privately owned airlines which mainly operate charter
flights.
Bali is served by Garuda since 1986 Garuda initiated joint services
with SIA, MAS, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Silk Air, China Airlines, Thai
Airways Int'l, Continental Airlines and Royal Brunei for direct
flights to Bali from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Brunei Darussalam,
Guatemala, Hongkong, Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo, and Taipei and other
service from Amsterdam, through Vienna and Abudhabi to Medan and
Bali, offering easier accessibility and overflying Jakarta.
BY SEA
Stretching over from Aceh to Papua , with thousands islands
connected on natural depth voyage, PELNI National Cruise Line -
the largest cruise ship in all indonesia region – domestic
ports also situated here are designed to be a high-tech regional
port. It has a container terminal, large warehouse area and commercial
centre, PELNI National Cruise is a major national leisure cruise
line.
Ferry operates a vehicular ferry service from Batam Island to Singapore
on the southern coastline of the Riau Kepulauan. Batam Island is
the gateway to the popular port to Singapore. There are four daily
trips and eight daily trips on weekends.
A free trade zone, Batam Island is currently being developed as
an industrial, commercial, residential, recreational and tourism
hub with a marina and resorts. With excellent harbourage, it is
also a major shipping and cargo terminal.
BY RAIL
Situated on the main rail route Java Express Railways with a daily
train service from Jakarta to Surabaya via Semarang, Jakarta to
Bandung, Jakarta to Surabaya via Jogyakarta, Surabaya to Bali via
Banyuwangi – are another entry point regulary services from
Java-Bali Island.
BY ROAD
The North Javacoastline Expressway links from Anyer, Jakarta, Cirebon,
Semarang , Surabaya, Banyuwangi to Bali – 2300km away. The
South Java Expressway links Anyer, Bandung, Cilacap, Jogya, Solo,
Malang, Jember to Banyuwangi – 1900km away. Near every toll-way
there are restaurants, shops, car parks and shopping complex.
